Burma Discovery Trip
Help MV Similan Jazz Help the Moken in Burma
The islands that make up the Mergui Archipelago in Burma are home to large populations of Moken people, often referred to as sea gypsies. Under the current Burmese regime the Moken receive very little help in the form of health care and education. Depending nearly entirely on the sea, the fishermen face more and more pressures every year to their very existence. Often bullied by the mainland fishing fleets for supplies the simple Moken way of life may become a thing of the past.
During the 2010-2011 season Siam Adventure Divers will be collecting unwanted or used eye glasses. The glasses will be distributed amongst the Moken people to help improve the quality of life for those with poor eye sight in March 2011 when MV Jazz embarks on its third annual 9 Day Burma Discovery Trip. The highlight of this trip will be the attendance of Dr Andrea Marshall who will be on-board conducting research and tagging giant manta rays. Dr Marshall has made numerous important and exciting discoveries about manta rays and is the subject of a brilliant BBC documentary, 'Andrea, Queen of the Mantas'. Andrea shares the views of the Jazz staff that in giving something back to these simple fishing communities we can hope to win their trust and effect a change in their lives.
The glasses will be distributed with easy to understand literature aimed at educating the fishermen to use more sustainable fishing methods & to protect precious coral reefs,
Help MV Similan Jazz help give sight to those in need. Please spread the word about what we are doing and send us your old glasses |
